old Mac TT kanji font - what tool to use?

I have a Japanese TrueType font from the 1990s that will install (ignoring the 'name' table structure error) in OS X but won't install in Windows.

Before I delve into the intricacies of modifying it in FontLab Studio 5, I would appreciate any advice on what tool and/or workflow is best for converting this font to a fully compatible OpenType format.
