Discussion started on forum.fontlab.com — this forum

Welcome to the new FontLab forum!

This forum is dedicated to font technology and type design. There are discussion boards dedicated to all products by FontLab, to products by Microsoft Typography, to the OpenType font development kit by Adobe, to some other 3rd party font development tools, as well as general to issues of font technology and type design.

The forum's address is http://forum.fontlab.com/.

This forum is using the SMF forum software, a popular extensible opensource forum engine. We plan to improve the forum software and add some interesting and useful features to it. If you have comments about how this forum works, please post them in this board.

The forum has an integrated help system which we recommend you go through to learn how to use the forum.

Forum structure
  • The forum consists of boards.
  • The boards are grouped into categories. For example, one category is FontLab Products and it includes boards such as FontLab Studio or Fontographer.
  • Some boards have child boards (sub-boards). For example, the FontLab Studio board has child boards for Problems, Tips and Tricks and for a Wish List.
  • Each board consists of posts organized into topics (threads).

Posting guidelines
  • If you want to write something on the forum, please always choose the most appropriate board. If a board has child boards, consider using one of the child boards rather than the general board (if appropriate).
  • Before starting a new topic, please check if the current board already has an existing topic on the same subject. It may be a good idea to do a search before staring a new topic.
  • To start a new topic on a board of your choice, go to that board and click on NEW TOPIC in the navigation bar on top right of the topic listing.
  • To post a reply to an existing topic, click on the topic and in the navigation bar on top right of the topic listing click on REPLY.
  • When writing a post, you can use SMF formatting tags to apply some styling, include links or external images. Some basic HTML tags (b, u, i, em, a, img, br, hr, pre, blockquote) are also permitted.
  • You can also include attachments in your posts. If you want your attachments to be accessible from many different posts (e.g. if you're posting a useful script, encoding, sample file etc.), upload it to the DOWNLOADS section and then include a link to it in your post. Please do not post attachments that violate the copyright or may harm other users in any way.
  • When you write a new post, there will be a tags line right below the subject line. Especially when writing some tips and tricks or "seminal" posts, enter comma-separated tags there — just like you would do on Flickr.
  • DO NOT POST SPAM LINKS to the forum. Users who include links in their posts that do not have any relation to this forum's topic (e.g. "cellulite remova" or "teeth whitening") will be banned from the forum.

Tell us what apps you are using
  • Click on PROFILE, then on Forum Profile Information and in the Personal Text field enter the name and version number of your primary font editor, and your operating system, e.g.: FontLab Studio 5.0.4, Mac OS X 10.4.11.
  • Alternatively, make sure to mention that information (along with additional details such as the applications that you're testing the fonts with) in any post that you write and that is related to font editing or testing.

E-mail notifications
  • You can enable e-mail notifications for entire boards or for selected topics.
  • To change the e-mail address to which you receive e-mail notificiation, click on PROFILE on the top navigation bar and select Account Related Settings on the left. Enter the address in the Email field and click on Change profile.
  • To enable e-mail notifications for an entire board, go to that board and in the navigation bar on top right of the topic listing click on NOTIFY. From now on, you will be notified on the replies to all topics that you have started, posted to that board.
  • Click on PROFILE on the top navigation bar, select Notification and Email on the left and in the notify me of: dropdown list select Replies and moderation to receive notification on replies to all topics on all the boards that you've requested notification.
  • To enable e-mail notifications for a topic, go to that topic and in the navigation bar on top right of the topic listing click on NOTIFY. From now on, you will be notified on all replies to that topic.
  • To enable e-mail notifications for a topic to which you write a post when you are writing it, click on Additional Options below the post contents area and enable the Notify me of replies checkbox. From now on, you will be notified on all replies to that topic.
  • To enable automatic e-mail notification for all topics that you write a post, click on PROFILE on the top navigation bar, select Notification and Email on the left and enable the checkbox Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic.
  • To view the list of e-mail notifications you have subscribed to, or to unsubscribe from some, click on PROFILE on the top navigation bar and select Notification and Email on the left.

Other forum features
  • Explore the PROFILE area to view all your posts, statistics, set avatar images, fill in some personal information, change some look and layout preferences etc.
  • The forum has an integrated messaging system accessible through the MY MESSAGES link in the top navigation bar. You can use it to send direct messages to other users or forum moderators.
  • The forum has an integrated calendar accessible through the CALENDAR link. Everyone is welcome to announce new typographic events or conferences using this calendar. Please read detailed guidelines for posting calendar items.
  • The forum has an integrated downloads section accessible through the DOWNLOADS link. You can post downloads there for scripts, encodings, sample files etc. Please do not post attachments that violate the copyright or may harm other users in any way.

This forum acts as a replacement and extension of the old MSN FontLab group. Since MSN will be closing their forums on February 21, 2009, we are working on moving the contents of the old MSN group to this new forum.

We also plan to move the archive of some other MSN groups such as the Microsoft Font Validator, Microsoft VOLT and Microsoft WEFT groups, as well as the SBL Fonts group.

We hope that the archives will appear here some time in February. You will then be able to search through the archives of both the old MSN group and the new forum using the same SEARCH feature.

I would like to underline one particular clause in our board policy:

DO NOT POST SPAM LINKS to the forum. Users who include links in their posts that do not have any relation to this forum's topic (e.g. "cellulite remova" or "teeth whitening") will be banned from the forum.

Please take this seriously.
