Hi there. We are currently using a font called "AAGarde" for engraving, which is Postscript Type 1 (which I learned from its info - i can find nothing online about this font...). This font simulates a single-stroke font, where its paths close and lay virtually on top of each other. The font would suffice, except it has ugly built-in "knobbies" on a handful of characters (presumably to give those letters a 3-D look...?) that we usually delete manually after the text has been converted to outlines. I wanted to be able to edit this font, specifically those few characters with this problem, so we don't have to manually delete these bits every time we use the font. (Ideally, we would use a true single-stroke font, but as far as I can tell they don't exist as TTF, OTF, PS, etc. for use in Illustrator on a Mac platform...)
I was going to try FontLab's demos, but FontLab Studio's demo gives an "Unable to unarchive...." (Error 91) message wherever I try to download from, and Fontographer will not allow me to generate a sample font from my modifications (to simply see if it will work and be worth purchasing), so I've been working with the Type Tool demo since it allows me to generate a font.
Using Adobe Illustrator 10 I've been trying just the basic uppercase alphabet to test it - importing the artwork into the glyph window as .eps, copying and pasting the artwork into the glyph window, and even opening the font and then generating a new one without modifying at all... Every font it generates contains letters with missing pieces or paths that have been broken into multiple parts - and not just where the FL logo cuts through.
I understand this is a demo, and that there's a message telling you it will distort some characters because of this - but I need to know if this is a demo-related problem, or if this is a common issue. As far as I can tell, I've followed the instructions in the FAQ's "How do I get my glyphs from Adobe Illustrator into FontLab Studio or TypeTool?" Perhaps I am doing something wrong?
