As someone who has limited knowledge of how fonts work, I have a question about a font possibility.

Is there any way you can assign a color (texture might work as well) to only part of a font?  Take 'M' for example, can you make the first line up to be blue, then the next down diagonal line to be green, then the next diagonal line up yellow, and lastly have the down line be orange?

The colors don't matter so much as the ability to have a font with letters that have different colors for each line.  I can manually create the effect if I paint the letters, but I want it in a font so it's re-usable.

I'm guessing that the nature of how fonts are more like paths, the answer to this is no, but I wanted to ask.

Thanks

You can split the M into different glyphs, throw them in different fonts (or activate the glyphs through an OpenType feature). In your DTP app of choice, you can copy the textbox on top of itself a few times, each time assigning another split-version of the font, then color each textbox (or even each glyph) differently.

Or you could use a photofont. see www.photofont.com.

I think font color is changed after the font is already made, think about it, like is msword you can change the color so I dont think you can do that pre-font. I'm no expert though.
