Missing punctuation

Hi
I'm new to this and have just created a font based on a series of handwritten characters. However the apostrophe and the quotation marks are not working. They are scanned and imported the same way as all the other characters but when the font is generated just those 2 characters are replaced by some sort of stock typeface version. I've checked it in Word and in Illustrator and it happens in both. Be grateful for any suggestions as to what and why.
Thanks
Jen

Both Word and Illustrator do "smart quotes"; they replace the typewriter marks ' " with curly ones ‘ ’ “ ”... so you need to have both in your font. If you haven't filled the curly quote slots, that would be the problem.
