Components & Hinting

Discussion started on TransType

Have a few more questions regarding the webfont conversion in TransType 4

What happens if:

1. An already hinted TTF is run through TransType
2. An unhinted TTF is run through TransType
3. A PS-font with composites intact is rung through TransType
4. A TT-font with composites is run through TransType

Thanks!

Transtype keeps the hints when it is possible.

1. hints to not change.
2. hints are generated.
3. composites are saved as composites.
4. the same.

In one of the upcoming updates we will add automatic generation of composites, so if OTF font (which does not have composites) converted to TTF, all glyphs that can be saved as composites are "compressed".

Regards,
Yuri Yarmola

I downloaded the demo and made some tests.

I tried converting an unhinted TTF. The result was the same: an unhinted TTF.

It seems it only autohint the PS-files, not the TTF-files.

It would be really good if it auto hinted TTF-files also. Is it possible?

...on the other hand. It would also make sense if it was possible to make unhinted version, so maybe it’s a better idea to keep it as it is.
