Best way to modify font when using Suitcase Fusion

Discussion started on TypeTool

I have begun to add additional glyphs to an existing font and wonder what is the best practice to do this? I use Suitcase Fusion to organize my fonts.

If you open an installed font with TypeTool, when you save it a .vfb file is generated in the same location as the font file. Since I am using Suitcase Fusion this is the “Vault.” When generating the modified font, the existing installed font is over-written with the new modified one.

I am unsure whether Suitcase Fusion can cope with .vfb files or fonts modified outside its functionality. So, I have been saving the font I am modifying outside the Vault, generating the modified font in that folder and then deleting the existing font and installing the modified font. Cumbersome in the extreme.

What is the best practice? Abandon font management software?

TIA
