Hi Adam,
It seems that the kerning is stripped when I apply the Tracking filter. This might be intended but I didn't expect it.

PS
I like the simple yet intuitive interface.
#2 - 2013-01-01, 07:40

The Hinting (vertical direction) is also not as it was after tracking

Best,
Martin
#3 - 2013-01-02, 07:16

I attempt to drag fonts in the window to begin the conversion but the fonts do not appear in the window.
#4 - 2013-01-15, 05:36

It can be good to have same visibility of what you have for example on Mac OS FontBook:
more complete naming, license,
+ panose, foundry code

Specially because converting to another format is generally not allowed by the licenses. So its a crucial info who should remain non-editable,
TransType user should be informed of what he doing?

Even a non intrusive code should be added by TransType on one of the fields copyright, description, license, or version? "TR4conv"

James,

would you kindly send me a direct mail to adam at fontlab dot com with some details? (Which font files, which OS, where your font files are located)

James, I had a similar problem and discovered the files must come from the top level folder on a given drive; otherwise they will not import.
#7 - 2013-01-16, 17:19

Adam, do you want beta reports as replies here or in the general TransType forum? I've been putting the ones I did outside this thread but others are posting here.
#8 - 2013-01-16, 17:21

George,

either way is fine. If you open a new topic, please include the build number and OS in brackets at the beginning, e.g.:
[4762 Mac] Cannot open TTC file

You can see the build number in the "About TransType" box.

Thanks!

Everybody: please test the "Webfont TT" export profile. We've added the brand-new *compressed* EOT output (using the Monotype MTX compression) which should yield a 50-60% smaller EOT file compared to the previous build, and compared to utilities such as ttf2eot.

Please report your findings here!

Best,
Adam

Adam, That problem I had with the previous version has now extended to this one as well, the the added issue of now even from the desktop I cannot add fonts to Transtype. Very Frustrating. Working with OSX 10.6.8
#11 - 2013-02-14, 05:00

Problem solved. I removed a ® from the path and everything works fine.
#12 - 2013-02-14, 10:19

Thank you George THomas
#13 - 2013-02-14, 10:19

Ah! Interesting. I'll test TransType with some non-standard characters in the path names and will see where it fails. It should accept all valid path names so if it chokes on the registered sign, we need to fix this.

Tested the default Webfont package on a Win XP SP3 machine, IE 6 and 8, Safari for Windows, Firefox for Windows.

The TTF, .woff and .eot function as they should in the browsers that support them; .svg not tested. No problems of any kind noted.

Same results from my Mac, Firefox 18.0.2. I did not test Safari for Mac.
#15 - 2013-02-15, 12:12

Not all the outlines of a PS OpenType font converted to TrueType via the Webfont TT etc. profile were TrueType outlines. CUrious to see the result I scrolled through the glyphs via FontLab's TT Hinting tool and was informed several times that the outlines were not TrueType
#16 - 2013-02-15, 13:54

I added several vfb files to TransType and it failed to organize them by their proper styles. The Italic was placed in the Regular slot. The Regular was placed in the Bold slot, and the Italic and Bold Italic slots were left unfilled
#17 - 2013-02-15, 13:58

James,

would you mind sending me the font files for both cases:
(1) Zip with 1-2 fonts where outlines were not all TrueType-style outlines
(2) Zip with the family of VFBs where the auto-organization did not succeed
directly to adam at fontlab dot com ?

I'd need them to pinpoint the problems.

Many thanks in advance!
Adam

Download OK. Would not install on OS 10.5.8 but did on several later OS versions. Clean, enjoyable interface. Good product but would be considerably better with several less gimmicky 'effects' and several more useful 'effects'. Will post again with some suggestions. WEBfont output functioned well, all files performed. Overall rating = 8/10. Should retail well. :)
#19 - 2013-02-20, 12:45

We'd be happy to hear what Effects you'd like to see!

We agree that many of the current effects are, indeed, gimmicky. They're there to provide some bits of fun to an otherwise very "serious" and utilitarian app.

Many thanks for your feedback, please keep it coming!

TransType 4 beta 4787 doesn't launch on Mac OS 10.5.6. Should it?

Not sure at this point. We'll investigate which the minimal Mac OS X version our new codebase can reasonably support.

I'd say that we'll certainly support Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. As for 10.5 and 10.4, I cannot promise we'll support these.

All kernings removed when converting OTF > woff/eot/ttf. Will the official release version transfer my kernings?

Thanks a lot for answer. Now itś clear.

One more question: when can we expect Windows version (nobody can prepare .sit files for me today)?
#24 - 2013-02-25, 06:43

We'll publish the Windows version within a few weeks, once the Mac OS X version is deemed reasonably problem-free.

Today TrT 4 beta 4787 expires; is another to be released soon, or is the RC almost ready?
#26 - 2013-02-28, 06:21

There will be another beta, today or tomorrow.

We've just published the 4th beta version (build 4808) today. It includes some improvements to the Credits and Licensing section (e.g. the EULA is now viewable). It'll expire on March 31st.

Many thanks for your feedback so far, we're heading towards a great release!

Adam

I can choose between Profile (Preserve) and (Optimize).
The first thing I do is search the manual for "preserve".
No results! Wrong manual?

Why is Profile named Profile instead of "output" or something else more down to earth?

In the Preferences it says: If destination file existst: Rename
But it doesn't work; everything is overwritten.

Where do I add WOFF customer Data?

Why is the space glyph getting outlines in the glyph panel (the word space in a wrong orientation) Aaaah!

Shouldn't there be some subsetting mechanism? It's for Webfonts right?
#29 - 2013-03-05, 05:09

Adam, again, where is the kerning?

1. We've just renamed the profiles "Native" to "Preserve" and "Optimized" to "Optimize". The manual still uses old naming, will be updated.

2. "Profile" -- future versions will allow the user to create custom profiles. A profile is a combination of the output font format and a number of operations that are perfomed before the generation. The output consists of the Profile but also Destination, so Profile is just part of output.

3. Rename -- not functional, bug confirmed.

4. WOFF customer data -- planned for the Foundry edition of the product.

5. The whitespace glyphs have a glyph name printed to give the user more orientation what the glyph is. May become a Preference in future releases.

6. Subsetting -- planned for the Foundry edition (subsetting of OpenType Layout is anything but trivial).

Thanks for the feedback, Lucas, and please keep it coming. Your sharp eye is truly valued and appreciated!

Our normal workflow is to take a well hinted TrueType font through some simple command line tools to generate web fonts. Not a nice process but the result looks as good as the font was hinted. We've been waiting for someone to build an interface to these tools.

Finally, after a long wait, there is a tool with an interface, super! (Of course we all know that the deceased FontLab should have gotten web font export functionality years ago)

But, a web font produced with TransType looks awful! Metrics change, hints are discarded. Replaced by some lousy auto hinting? How dare you call it "Optimize" when in effect it destroys all the optimization I put into the font!? It should be called "Vandalize" :-)

So we'll wait another year until the "Preserve" (don't touch my optimized font) functionality is working?
In my opinion "Preserve" should be named "Default" and "Optimize" should be named "Experimental Autohinting".
When the input font has TrueType Hinting, TransType should assume this serves a purpose and leave it in the font!
#33 - 2013-03-07, 06:03

FYI, using beta 4, converting .vfb to both .ttf and .otf is giving me a name validation error on os10.8.

I have a 48 member family that I am trying to get working in Word 2011. TTF conversion runs fine, but otf randomly crashes after 10 fonts or so. (number varies)
#34 - 2013-03-25, 16:49

OK, so TrT4 Beta expired yesterday -- so when will a new Beta, or a final release, be forthcoming?
#35 - 2013-04-01, 07:51

Applogies, due to the Easter break we have a few days delay in publishing a new beta build.

In the meantime:
1. Open System Preferences
2. Open the System / Date & Time section
3. Uncheck "Set date and time automatically"
4. Change the date to be before March 31, 2013
5. Click on Save
6. Run TransType
7. Enable "Set date and time automatically"
8. Close System Preferences

Once TransType has started, it'll keep working even if the date is past the expiry date of a build.

Hello again, please cut the TransType ridiculous disgrace and build a solid webfont output into FontLab.
#37 - 2013-04-04, 03:01

When is the next version coming out? The last one expired almost a month ago.
#38 - 2013-04-20, 14:01

We expect a next build with many fixes this week!

So, Adam, what's the latest target date for an updated TrT4 build? This is the beginning of the third week since your last comment about it.
#40 - 2013-05-06, 18:11

We've got a small number of very relevant bugs which need to be fixed. Today, I've received one internal build from our developers which is "quite OK" but I'd rather not release it publicly yet.

Before we publish the next public build, please e-mail me directly to adam at fontlab dot com with the subject line "Request for intermediate TransType 4 build" and I'll e-mail you the link to the download for the current internal build.

Best,
Adam

Build 4900, OS X 10.8.3

I did NOT get any warning about an unsigned app. Just so you know.

First font I generated for testing (Adobe Type 1 font) has two copies of CR, one named CR.001. All character access shifted one character to the left, i.e. if I type TAV to check kerning in FLS 5.1.4, I get the correct kerning values showing but the names and the glyphs which preview are S@U. This is converting from Type 1 to OTF PS.

Second font, one of mine. Type 1 font to OTC PS. Had two copies of CR, both named CR, had three copies of Eth, one at the very beginning and two towards the end. Same problem with checking kerning -- everything shifted left one glyph.

Shifted characters are not limited to the Kerning Preview in FLS. It happens in Suitcase Fusion 4 and InDesign CS6 also.
#43 - 2013-06-02, 18:25

Ah!

Would you mind sending me the Type 1 fonts in a ZIP file to adam at fontlab dot com?

Thanks!

Build 4902 OS X 10.8.3

The Character Mapping is resolved. But... using the same test font groups I sent you yesterday, I'm wondering if the OTF fonts as generated by TRT4 will work correctly without corrections in a font editor.

Two of the Adobe fonts I tested: when opening the TRT4 OTF in FLS 5.1.4 have flags indicating that many of the hints need correcting, and there are several Unicode naming conflicts.

Two fonts of mine that I tested have three (3) copies of the NULL character with different Unicode points along with CR and HT, all flagged as having naming conflicts.

I would think if OTF fonts didn't need characters such as CR, HT and NULL, TRT4 would automatically delete them.

We have just published build 4909. It should now have much better handling of the "first four glyphs" (.notdef, NULL, CR, space). Some problems in handling PostScript hints have also been resolved.

Using build 4909. Mac OS 10.8.

Good thing is that .vfb to .otf generation works now. Bad news is that it strips out all kerning.
#49 - 2013-06-15, 10:00

I'd like to examine the issue of "strips out all the kerning" a little closer. Could you please send the the VFB to adam at fontlab dot com?
