True SmallCaps in OpenType font ?

Trying get the true smallcaps to appear in Indesign with an OT font I'm making.
I think this is an encoding issue as Indesign is making false small caps when I try the smallcaps option.
Could someone give a basic summary of how to set-up the encoding so it works for a OT font for Mac?

the alternative here is to get your font and go thru it character by character to see what's wrong
the easy way is to open a font which works the way you want and then insert your characters and then rename and generate with the original encoding of that font...
