Adam Twardoch kindly laid out a routine to make family names with.
I've made a family (lets call the family 'Client'):  Reg, Ita, Bol, Bol Ita, Medium, Medium Ita, by following the instructions here:
http://forum.fontlab.com/fontlab-studio-tips-and-tricks/font-family-naming-in-fontlab-studio-5-t313.0.html

When installed in the Mac and Win OSs I see...
On Macintosh I see one family: Client Reg, It, Bol, Bol It, Med, Med Ita.
On Windows I see two families: Client Rg, Client Md (all styles can be accessed via the style palette.
So far so good. That's whats supposed to happen.

Issue is with Windows ONLY - When I send the fonts to my Client and he 'embeds' the fonts into his program for runtime use, the font naming gets screwed up.
I've been changing things in a logical way here to try and get different results, but they make no sense.
When the Client embeds, the fonts each get listed individually and as 'Regular'. Only the Client has the tools to embed into his program,
so all I can do is try to second guess what's required. Why should the fonts be listed so differently when embedded.
Has anyone any experience of this?

BTW I've also tried making two families with short names(Client Rg, Client Md) for both Mac & Win with the same results.
Thanks for any insight into this frustrating issue.

You don’t provide enough information. How shall anybody help, if you don’t post your naming scheme in the way, in which Adam has done it in his tutorial? And if even you don’t know the program of your friend, how shall anybody else know, if there is not a bug in the program, that causes the problem?

But however, I think there is no need to abbreviate the weights in different ways. Either Reg or Rg, either Med or Md.
