Name & Unicode don't match key

hello. I have a font that does contain an ä (a-Umlaut). It is named adieresis, it's Unicode 00E4. Both equal the naming in other fonts. However, hitting the according key (on a german keyboard) does not bring about the letter; nor does any other key. The letter shows in PopChar, but when chosen from there, it doesn't appear in, say, TextEdit (instead I get a x-like cross), nor does PopChar propose any key or key combination to access it. (By the way, the same applies to all other Umlauts.) — Since I can't seem to find any difference in encoding compared to other fonts, I am clueless. Any idea where to start?

This is a Mac suitcase linked to PostScript file, right? It doesn't have Unicode info just glyph names. The encoding is custom. By the way what is your system version? Haven't you tried Keyboard Viewer?

best practice when things get like this is to open a font which works the way you want and then paste your characters into this font and rename it and re-generate it
