Sync metrics/glyphs windows, strings in neighbors

I would like to be able to automatically synchronize what gylph is selected in the metrics/kerning table with whatever glyph I am working on in the active glyph window.

I would also like the ability to enter put strings on either side of glyphs using the neighbors feature instead of being limited to single characters.
