Having the ability to create new editing layers for guides and control the visibility of each layer would be a great help. This way I could create sets of guides for working with layers, another for numbers, another for accents, math characters, and so on without cluttering up my glyph window.

Oh, yes – great idea. I always get irritated at all the guides near the baseline. One for lowercase, one layer for uppercase etc, etc. would be very handy.
