The measurement line is a great tool for spacing type. But it would be better if it were not actually visible in the metrics window unless I check a box or hold down a modifier key. That would give me the same functionality, but without the distraction of a big red line running through my type.

I second that.

Another idea I had a while ago: it would be handy to have a "measurement zone" instead of a measurement line. Sometimes you know the height zone that matters – or want to exclude everything above or below a certain height – but the exact vertical position of the horizontal extrema is not consistent.

Isn't that a toggle anyway or am I missing something?  The red line that shows up with the selection box clicked?

The box toggles whether or not the line is used to measure sidebearings instead of measuring the distance from the point closest to the sidebearing. This feature would be more useful if I could use it without having to actually see a big read line running through my type.
