Hello, I am still newbie of Fontlab Studio...

I was assuming that if I imported an existing font (like Times New Roman OT) font into FontLab, didn't do anything, and used "generate" function of the FontLab and saved as OT font, I would be getting a font exactly same as the original font (Times New Roman), right?

But I keep getting a font slightly different from the original. It seems that spacings above the chractors have been changed when it goes through FontLab. I was wondering how I can correct this problem and keep the original font as it is.
Ultimately, I want to add some characters to the existing font for my use. But if the Fontlab changes original font, that would be a problem...

Kel,

please set the Preferences on Mac or Tools / Options on Windows to the settings showed on the attached images. This should keep the changes to a minimum.

FontLab Studio does not offer 100% roundtripping when it comes to OpenType fonts, but about 98% accuracy can be achieved with the settings shown here.

Regards,
Adam

Thank you for the reply.

But when I changed the setting, generate file, and tried to install the new font, I got an error message "
Unable to intall the font. File XXX is either invalid or damaged." Cry

I am assuming that this was caused by changed setting... Cry

You mean, you just opened an existing font and generated it, without any changes?

This is a strange error message. Please provide us with some more details (operating system etc.), and perhaps include a screenshot.

Alternatively, go to http://www.fontlab.com/support/problem/ and report the problem there so the customer support can take a look at it. (There, you should include both the original and the modified font files for comparison).

This problem only happens in my XP computer. Things are fine in my Vista (without changing the setting) for some reasons.

But now I have another question. Cry
I found that when I open Times New Roman ver 5 (opentype TT), immediately generate new TrueType/OpenType TT selecting "binary" option for OT feature, certain features of OT disappears (mark and mkmk) in the new font. OpenType PS saving with binary option seems to maintain all OT features (though it will change glyphs slightly).

I thought that by selecting "binary" option Fontlab would preserve the OT features which are not capable of recognizing in software.

Is this a bug? Or am I missing something?   Huh
