Grey letters?

Hello everyone. I am new on this forum, so please be gentle 

I created a bunch of letters by using paint. When I export them as bitmap files, they are shown in grey colour in fontlab. There is nothing I can do with the grey letters. What am I doing wrong?

They need to be turned into vector shapes by tracing.

tools/background/trace

To adjust trace settings, hit F10 and you'll see trace options at the bottom.
