I would like to know which is the right way to create combining marks without using the GPos OpenType tables. I had seen some fonts that have 0 width  (or 1 em width) markcs and the drawing of the mark placed at the left of the zero or origin vertical line. But I would like to use the same system such fonts as the Hebrew David.ttf font use: the marks have normal width and the are not GPos OpenType tables, but they are printed on top or under the base character. I would like to know which technical feature can I use to do this, since I cannot see any difference between the mark and the base characters.
