The problem you describe with synthetic fonts occurs when you embed the real font, and a synthesised version of that font. To IE these fonts are exactly the same and IE will only use one of them - which means that characters covered by the one it doesn't use show up as missing glyphs (the rectangle).

There's nothing technically wrong with using a synthesised font, just as there's nothing technically wrong with artificially emboldening or italicizing a font. We don't think WEFT should stop people using their fonts in this way.
