Hello,

This is for Mr. Hudson -

First, I like the typeface of the Hebrew font very much. Would you tell a little bit about the process of designing it? Have you designed other Hebrew typfaces as well? What about non-Hebrew typefaces?

Second, I would like to learn how to use the OpenType format in order to create Hebrew fonts with perfect nikkud and kerning, and it seems as if you've got all the knowledge. Could you instruct me please of where to find that knowledge, and of what's important to know?

Many thanks,
Ori

Ori,

I'm just recovering from a major hard drive crash (nothing lost, thankfully), so can't respond to your questions now. I'll try to respond early next week.

Regards, John

It seems both of us have forgotten all about it, but now that I see my questions, I've become interested in your answers once again...

Thank you for reminding me.

I have designed some other Hebrew faces, but only for use with modern Hebrew (nikud positioning only, not te'amim). One of these was for the Helvetica Linotype fonts (I also designed new Greek and Cyrillic for this family). I can't talk about my other Hebrew project yet, but my clients will be releasing it this year, I believe.

I'm currently working on a Greek font for SBL, for New Testament scholarship, and a Latin companion type that will contain additional characters for textual criticism and other scholarly needs.

SBL published a short article I wrote about the design of the SBL Hebrew type: http://www.sbl-site.org/Article.aspx?ArticleId=118

Your other question is more difficult to answer. What level of experience do you have in type design and/or font production? I'm wondering what level of information you need.
