Dear All,

I have just completed work on version 1.14 (build 100) of the SBL Hebrew font, and this is now available for community members to download and test from the Documents area: http://groups.msn.com/SBLFonts/documents.msnw

I would like to thank Pim Rietbroek and Samuel Arnet for their contribution to this version. Pim encouraged me to add support for DSS transcription characters and provided very useful scans of publications. Samuel reported a number of bugs in the previous version, which I have been able to fix. The main changes are:

1. Support for Dead Sea Scrolls transcription. Some new glyph/character support for the combining ring above and other marks used in DSS transcription.

2. Change in logic of pashta positioning following holam. In previous versions, I had pashta rendering to the left of the holam, in order to distinguish it from qadma. But review of BHS and other print editions indicates that it should be to the right of holam, with the holam slightly offset to the left from its normal position. This is now implemented.

3. The positioning of cantillation marks relative to letters taking the furtive patah is now fixed.

4. The positioning of marks on narrow letters preceding letters taking the furtive patah in now fixed.

I will be revising the manual in the next few days, and then preparing a new distribution file for SBL. Please let me know if you encounter any problems with v1.14 build 100.

Dear John,
Please go over again what I am to do with the compressed file and where the
two additional DSS characters are located.

Download the zip file to your desktop. Uncompress it to the same location.

You will need to delete the old version of the font from your Windows/Fonts directory before you can install the new version. You get get to the Fonts directory from your Start menu: Settings/Control Panel/Fonts.

Install the new version by dragging it or copying it into your Windows/Fonts directory.

The characters for DSS transcription are:

U+25E6, white bullet
U+2022, black bullet
U+030A, combining ring above
U+0307, combining dot above

John,
I deleted the old font and saved the new font to the desktop.  I don't know
how to
"Uncompress it to the same location"
Furthermore, I need the keyboard strokes for the new characters.
Thanks,
Andy

Your computer should have a zip utility already installed. If you double click on the zip file, it should present you with the opportunity to uncompress (expand) it. The zip file contains the ttf font file, which should then be copied to your Fonts directory.

If you can't get the zip file uncompressed. Let me know and I will post the actual ttf font file. I used to zip to save space, but the ttf is quite small.

You cannot input the new DSS characters from the existing Tiro or SIL keyboards. I need to prepare new versions of both of these.

U+0307, combining dot above, can be input from the Tiro keyboard (v1.2). Position = Q

These characters will need to be assigned, but almost all the easily accessible positions in both keyboard are already assigned, so these lesser-used characters would have to be buried in the shift+altGR state:

U+25E6, white bullet
U+2022, black bullet
U+030A, combining ring above

Alternatively, I could develop a keyboard specifically for working with DSS texts. Perhaps that would be better.

In the meantime, in MS Office you can get at these characters using the Insert Symbol tool.

Alternatively, in Word you can access these characters by typing in the four-character Unicode code, e.g. 25E6, and then pressing alt+X. This will automatically convert the character code into the corresponding character. Note that you'll need to be in English keyboard mode to do this, which is a bit of a hassle, and when the character first appears it may be in the wrong font and need to be changed to SBL Hebrew. My advice would be to enter the characters you need at the beginning of your document, and then copy and paste them as needed in the text.

Sorry these characters are not easy to work with immediately. They will be easier to handle when they are addressible from a keyboard.
