Folks,

Not sure if this is the correct forum; if not I apologize and ask to be pointed to the correct one.

When I try to use the SBL Hebrew font (1.12) in OpenOffice.org Writer, the margins and spacing get horribly mangled.  It works fine under Windows Notepad, though.  Searching online, it seems other people think this font and OO.org are a good match.  Any clues or hints as to what I might be doing wrong?

Can you post a screenshot showing the symptoms of the problem, or send one to me at tiro[at]tiro[dot]com ?

Apparently not.  I'll email it to you instead.

Just to tell you what you probably already suspect: the combination of OOrg Writer (2.0.2) and SBL Hebrew (1.14/2006 Build 001) works fine on my system (Win XP/SP2).... At least there is hope!

Happy New Year!

Joel, I've not previously seen anything like the problems in your screenshot, but have not tested in Open Office apps myself. My wife runs OO, though, so I will follow this up.

As a first step to solving this, please download version 1.14 of the SBL Hebrew font from this site

http://groups.msn.com/SBLFonts/documents.msnw

and see if that makes any difference (it shouldn't, but who knows...)

[I tried to upload the screenshot myself, but was told by MSN that I had exceeded my storage limit, even though they also told me that I had 2.6MB free. Ahem!]

That combination didn't work for me, and now I'm using OO.org 2.1 and SBL Hebrew 1.14 Build 001 and am getting the same problem.

This might be an OO.org problem; anyone know where to report such a thing?

Same problem I had; I've uploaded the picture to imageShack: http://img308.imageshack.us/img308/4707/hebrewbugscreenshotms9.png.

I’ve still been having the problems with OpenOffice.org mangling text SBL Hebrew (1.14pre) and I think I found the culprit: It’s the comma. See this screenshot for an example: http://preview.tinyurl.com/ywavuw.

Notepad (and, I think, MS Word, though I need to check again) handles the comma fine, so it might be an OO.org issue, but I think you folks had best know of it.

Joel, the comma showing in your screenshot is from some completely different font: it isn't SBL Hebrew. I believe it is the comma from the MS system font Tahoma.

I've done some testing myself and noticed an interesting thing in OO.org Writer: if I input a comma in SBL Hebrew text using either the system charmap applet or using the Tiro Biblical Hebrew keyboard (Ctrl+Alt+'), it displays correctly in the SBL Hebrew font. But if I change the directionality of the paragraph layout the comma changes to one of the system fonts. If the text starts as LTR and I change to RTL, the comma becomes Tahoma. If the text starts as RTL and I shift to LTR, the comma becomes Times New Roman.

If I reselect the text and choose SBL Hebrew from the font menu, it appears to solve the problem, and the comma is changed back to the correct one.

There is another problem with the comma, and other punctuation in Hebrew text, and this is that kerning between Hebrew letters and common punctuation, which exists in the font, is not being applied by either OO.org or by MS Word. This is actually a common and stupid problem with shaping engines: they fail to take into account that characters like the comma are used with non-European scripts.
