Andrew--

Did you solve the Narkisim problem yet? and are you using Windows XP? if so, try this:

Choose Replace on the edit menu

For"Find what": Hit the Format--font buttons at the bottom

Type Narkisim in the Complex scripts box, hit OK

For "Replace with": repeat the process; type SBL Hebrew in the Complex scripts box/ OK.

That should change all of your narkisim properly, but you might do the first few changes one at a time to be sure.

You can also use this process to get your SBL Hebrew back if it has been inadvertantly switched to TNR ( for "Find", type TNR in the COMPLEX scripts box, that will just find and change the Hebrew, and leave the English alone)

Hope it helps--

That depends on whether the Narkisim font is used only for Hebrew or also for other text. If the former, you just search for text in Narkisim and replace with SBL Hebrew (by leaving the search and replace lines blank while specifying the font for each). If the latter, that is when you would used wildcard searching to search for characters in a range.

James,
What I'm trying to do is change - in a 340 page book - all the Narkisim
Hebrew, much of it pointed through the insertion of special characters, to
John's SBL font.  How do I do that?

Andy, what 'special characters' were used in the pointing of the Narkisim text?

Do you know which version of Narkisim you are using? from which font vendor? There are several different sources for this design.

Woh, John,
I use the Narkisim font that came with Word 2003.  The special characters
part is a good question.  You hit the special characters emblem on the
toolbar (looks like a Greek omega), and you get all kinds of menues.  If
you're in Hebrew you should get that part of the complex script chart with
Hebrew signs.  If you're not that lucky, you may get a Times-Roman or some
other chart and then have to scroll up and down to find the Hebrew points.
They occupy a line or two squeezed in betwwen Arabic signs above and Runic
below, and there are alot of other characters - like square root, etc. all
over the place.  It takes some hunting - expecially for the kof wih imbedded
shewa and kof with embedded kamets.  Those two are tricky, and if you get
them you're lucky.  Asking me questions about Computer issues is like asking
the camel for a drink of water.  I hope that helped.

John,
While the DSS Keyboard is working fine on the new desktop computer, on the
laptop when I hit the W key to get the hollow circle over the letter I see
the circle positioned left of where it should be.  Then when I check the
font in the word letter/sign by letter/sign I find that at the hollow circle
it switches to Tahoma.  I think the glitch may have something to do with my
recent installation of Logos Bible software, because after the installation
I found my SPIonic font deleted.  Should I reinstall the keyboard?

Andrew,

I'm a big fan of reinstalling software when there are glitches,
but this may not help if you have never had the keyboard working properly on
your laptop.  Laptop keyboards are mapped differently to desktops, so that
some of the non-alphanumeric keys function differently on a laptop
to the way they do on a full keyboard and this may be your
problem.

I was about to say that I have no problem with my laptop but I
realised that I always use an external keyboard plugged into a USB port because
the laptop keyboard makes my wrists and shoulders ache.  If you have a USB
keyboard on your desktop, you could try plugging it into your laptop to see if
this fixes your problem. You could try turning on the NumLock, which
changes the way some of the non-alpha-numeric keys map.  How you do this
will vary from laptop to laptop.  On mine, it's Fn-F11 (or hitting the
NumLock key on the plug-in keyboard).  I leave it on by default and if I
turn it off I find that I have problems with my non-Latin
keyboards.

I'm interested to hear that you've had problems installing some of
the Logos software, as I haven't.  I use the Logos Coptic keyboard and the
Logo Biblical Greek keyboard with no problems (don't type Hebrew, so can't
comment on it), but I also have the Libronix software installed
and use some of their ebooks.

Regards

Judy

Andy,

1. re. 'special characters'
Okay, so you are just using the insert symbol function to access the Hebrew points. When you said 'special characters' I thought you might mean that you were using some custom, non-Unicode encoding. So long as all the characters are standard Unicode -- and it sounds like they are -- Ruth's search-and-replace method should work fine for you.

2. re. the DSS keyboard issue
Check the version number of the font on both machines, and make sure that you are using the same version of the font. Support for DSS transcription is currently only available in the version 1.14 build available from

http://groups.msn.com/SBLFonts/documents.msnw

It is possible -- but unlikely -- that this problem is related to your Logos installation, because Logos might be installing an older version of the SBL Hebrew font that does not include the DSS transcription characters. I'll bring this thread to the attention of the Logos folk, and perhaps they can comment. It is possible that the version of SBL Hebrew you already had installed is being uninstalled during the Logos installation and replaced (if this is the case, it would be nice if they checked the version number before doing that). If that has happened, then Word will realise that the font doesn't contain the superscript ring character, and will switch to a fallback font.

That said, I've noticed a problem with Word switching to a fallback font in some instances even when the font does contain the necessary characters. As a workaround, you can enter text in NotePad or Wordpad, and then copy and paste it into Word, and this seems to correct the problem.

As a general rule, if you have a problem in Word, test the same thing in NotePad. Word does all sorts of 'helpful' things, while NotePad is very simple and exposes exactly what the shaping engine (Uniscribe) and the font are doing without the risk of other application (dis)functionality interfering. In this case, try entering text including the superscript ring in NotePad (having first set the font to SBL Hebrew). If you get an empty box or a box with a ? in it instead of the superscript ring, that will confirm that you are using a version of the font that does not support this character.

Dear John,
I checked, and you're right.  The version of SBL Hebrew on the laptop was
the old version.  In trying to transfer the new version from the desktop to
the laptop I lost the new version from the desktop.  Can you tell me how to
get it back without buying a new unzip version?  My trial unzip programs
seem to have expired.  Using these unzip programs is a real pain in the
neck.
Andy
PS I have to get this reinstalled soon, siince I'm submitting an article to
Textus using the DSS characters.

John,
The problem is not - I assume - the unzip program (I installed a new one)
but rather the fact that what I find at groups.msn.com/sblfonts/documents is
sbl_hbrw_1.14.zip, which - when extracted - goves a 60k font file that was
last updated March 25, 2006.  The last time I looked at the specs of the
font that was working on my desktop before it (the font) disappeared it said
61k (I think) and was newer than March 25, 2006 (I think).  The font at
www.sbl-site.org is even older, from 2005.  If you don't get around to this
today, I may have to change everything back to Narkisim and indicate the two
kinds of dubious letters with "Outline" and "Engrave" from the font-format
features offered by Word.  I'm under time pressure.
Andy

The March 2006 v1.14 is the last public release version (v2.00 is almost ready, but I have some final fiddly things to do on it). It is a 61k zip file that unzips to a 161k ttf font file. I will email the font directly to you, to make sure you have the correct version in hand.
