Firxt, Patty
Ken Penner is your best contact.  Second, Times-Roman doesn't work with
cholam.  Thus I use Narkisim.  In Times-Roman the cholam is as you said - to
the left of the letter, not joined to it.  This is a bug in Word.  Third,
you shouldn't be having problems otherwise.  You have two options for
entering vowels: a. as Ken does, using the system keyboard presing down on
CAPS-LOCKS then pressing shift + a key in the number row.  b. as I do,
access the vowels from the Symbols chart and assign each one a shortcut key.
  My shortcuts are as follows:
kamats = ALT-1
patah = ALT-2
hiriq = ALT-3
tsere = ALT-4
segol = ALT-5
holam = ALT-6
qubuts = ALT-7
sheva = ALT-8
dagesh = ALT-9
sin dot = ALT-0
hataf qamats = CTRL-1
hataf patah = CTRL-2
hataf segol = CTRL-3
shin dot = CTRL-4
If you need help connecting the names given above with the signs, ask Ken
for the link to the unicode charts (Hebrew), or get a Hebrew grammar.  To
assign shortcut keys, go to Word help or get a Word book at the bookstore.

Dear John,
The overdot is - as you said - at 05C4.  The over hollow circle seems to be
at 05A5.  Can I enter these in Word 2003?   How do I enter signs by their
unicode number?  Or do I have to wait for your next Hebrew font?  Or use
Phil Paynes's unicode font?

Besides creating a keyboard layout, there are other ways to insert
Unicode characters:

In MS
Word, type the unicode number (e.g., 05c4) and then press
Alt-X.

To
insert them in other applications, I am impressed by BabelMap (http://www.babelstone.co.uk/Software/BabelMap.html).

Patty,
If you cloose Ken's method, don't forget to unlock the CAPS-LOCK after you
enter the vowel.  I.e. type the Hebrew letter, press down on CAPS-LOCK, hold
the shift key and simultaneously type in the appropriate key from the
numbers row, unlock the CAPS-LOCK key and go on with your next Hebrew
letter.  Now you know why the Israelis (and the Dead Sea scrolls autjhors!)
avoid(ed) using vowels.

Ken,
Thanks for the tip.  I tried it in Word working in Narkisim.  1) It didn't
work from the Hebrew keyboard.  I.e. I had to go back to the English
keyboard to get the point at 05c4 to appear over the nun I had typed.  2) It
shifted my font from Narkisim to "Unicode Arial".   3) I had no luck with
05a4, and when I retried 05c4 in a sequence also that petered out, and I
just saw a hollow rectangle displayed.  I'm afraid I have to buy Phil
Payne's font to get these two signs (Linguist software).  Or should I try
your link to Babel etc.?

Andy,

I
think you need a better font than Narkisim. Do you not use the SBL Hebrew font
(which this forum was intended to support)? Ezra SIL also works very
well(http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&item_id=SILHebrUnic2).
These are both free.

Patty,
Narkisim is a standard font with Word.  Just select it from the list of
Hebrew fonts.

Ken,
What do you know about Coptic fonts?  Is there something I can download to a
disk at the library then onto my machine at home?

I think the only free Unicode standard Coptic font available is at
http://ist-socrates.berkeley.edu/~pinax/greekkeys/NAUdownload.html

Dear RG,
I downloaded the Coptic fonts as per your recommendation and can't find
epsee (Greek upsilon) when I'm working in Word, though it's there on the
Copptic popup keyboard when working with the Coptic wordprocessor that comes
with the fonts.  I tried all the keys in Word and no epsee!  Do you have
advice?
