I have just downloaded the new SBL Hebrew font and am very excited.  Finally, a font that puts the nikkud in the right places (allows holem without waw, raised shewa and qamats with final kaf) and allows te'amim as well (by the way, I'm assuming on the te'amim that the meteg is supposed to double as silluq?).  And it's a nice-looking font, as well.  Kol ha-kavod to the designers!  I have a number of friends who will be very happy for this long-awaited advance!

I have found one rather major glitch.  Throughout most of the Bible the toponymn "Yerushalaim" is written without a yod (between the final lamed and mem), which means, in a sense, that the lamed gets two vowels, one after the other, either patach and hiriq or, in pause, qamats and hiriq.  Currently, when you type the word without the yod, the hiriq appears all by itself below a dotted circle.  How can this problem be solved?  I should note that the quality Word and Dagesh fonts (David, Narkissim, etc.) already allowed the hiriq to be the "second vowel" in cases like this without putting an entire space between the lamed and mem.

On a much less important note, my keyboard does not function according to the PDF instruction booklet provided with the download.  Pressing SHIFT does not allow me to input nikkud and te'amim.  The nikkud still functions as it does on a normal Israeli keyboard, while the te'amim I have to input as symbols (this is not a terrible thing, as it is possible to define how to do this myself).  Have I done something wrong in the installation?

Thanks

What application and operating system versions are you using? The dotted circle is inserted at the character level by the Uniscribe engine, over which I have no control, when it believes a mark sequence to be invalid, but the most recent version of Uniscribe, which ships with Office 2003, accepts the sequence as valid. This sequence does render correctly (with the hiriq tucked under the right side of the final mem, following the typographic convention of the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) in Office 2003 and will work more widely in the next version of Windows:

On the keyboard issue, it sounds as you have not selected the correct keyboard from the MS language bar. If you have two Hebrew keyboards installed, you should be able to select either one, but by default the first, probably the Israeli keyboard, will be selected. You should have a small square icon on your taskbar with a two letter language identifier (HE for Hebrew). For any language for which you have more than one keyboard driver installed, you should see a small keyboard icon beside the language identifier. If you click on this keyboard icon, you should be able to select from multiple keyboards. Note that there is a display bug that sometimes obscures the keyboard icon; you can force it to display correctly by clicking on the language identifier and selecting 'Show the Language bar'. This will restore the full language bar to your screen and you can select the keyboard icon here or minimise the language bar and this refresh the display. If you can't get the little keyboard item to display even with the language bar open, that means you only have one keyboard installed for that language, and need to go back a step in your installation.

Hope this helps. Glad you like the font.

Dear John, Thank you for your quick
response.

I use Windows XP and the Hebrew version of Word XP
(from Office XP Student Edition).

In the meantime I was able to 'solve' both
issues.  As for the second (keyboard) issue:  after turning off and
restarting my computer the keys worked more or less as the PDF manual
said.  The only difference I noticed is that the number keys, which used to
give the Hebrew nikkud when both CAPS LOCK and SHIFT were depressed,
now do so with only CAPS LOCK depressed (which is a nice feature, though I
didn't see it mentioned in the manual).

Regarding the other issue, about Yerushalaim.
I noticed on page 9 of the PDF manual that there's a character called "zero
width joiner".  I simply insert that before the hiriq and it looks
great.  I also found a similar issue with the tetragrammaton when the
waw is pointed with two vowels (either holem and
hirik for elohim or holem and qamats for
adonai).

I'm not sure why the combination wasn't recognized
to begin with.  What I have been trying to produce is a ready-to-use BH
text with nikkud for personal use (Now I'm just waiting for someone to
get around to putting in the te'amim!).  Such a text, in the David
Font, can be downloaded from a site called the Karaite Korner.  When I
changed that text from David to the new SBL Hebrew font, the promblem arose
unexpectedly.  The fix I found, however, seems to work.

Again, I am VERY pleased with this new font.
It seems to contain almost everything one needs.  And the fact that it is
still being developed and worked on is also a plus.

Thanks again for the quick response,

Keep up the good work,

Shabbat Shalom from Yerushalayim.

Aaron
