John Hudson I am not aware of any such specification, and there are lots of Unicode fonts out there that do not support Latin 1. It is a recommendation of some software developers that fonts support at least one 8-bit codepage fully, but this is mainly for backwards compatibility and so that users don't wonder why they get Arial when they try to type Latin characters with a Hebrew, Arabic, Devanagari, etc. font.
The current SBL Hebrew font claims support for the Windows Hebrew codepage in the OS/2, even though not all the characters in that codepage are supported, but this is necessary to have the font recognised as supporting Hebrew in some applications. Again, a backwards compatibility issue. The November release of the SBL Hebrew font will contain Latin characters and others to fully support this codepage.
Microsoft have a set of
recommended characters that Office likes to have any any font, and these are included in the current SBL Hebrew font.
Eventually, we'll be releasing the SBL BibLit font, which will contain Hebrew, Greek and Latin in one package, fully supporting numerous 8-bit codepages.
