I give up: how do I place a diaresis above a Heh in SBL hebrew (with TImes New Roman as the regular font). I have tried typing in Unicode 0308, switching keyboards in mid-word, and various other contortions; the latest development is that the character seems only to show up in Arial Unicode MS--but I still haven't figured out how to attach it to the letter. NB--we use Windows XP Pro and Word 2003, for what it's worth.

Thanks everyone!

I'm a little bit confused by your reference to 'TImes New Roman as the regular font'. Are you using the SBL Hebrew font or not? If you are using the SBL Hebrew font, you can input the diaeresis directly from either the Tiro or SIL keyboard layout.

Whar's the best deal for a Coptic font?  Is there an SBL Coptic?  Can I
download it to diskette at the library and then to my computer at home?

For a good Coptic font go to http://www.copticchurch.net/coptic_fonts/ .  They have downloads for Windows and users for other OS.  I have used the font on a laptop that runs Windows 2000 Pro.  I plan to start using it on my Linux system as well.  You can download it to disk or right into your computer.

There is no SBL Coptic, but I hope there will be in the future. It has been discussed by some of the SBL Font Foundation partners.

Hi! sorry to be confusing. I am using TNR as the Latin font and SBLHebrew as the complex font. I have tried inserting the character from the Insert symbols menu. That worked for a while--except that on our Hebrew University computer the symbol is half on/half off--one dot over the heh one in the following space. Can you think of a way to fix it?

Thank you!

Ruth

Hmm. If the diaeresis mark is sitting between the letters, that suggests a font switching problem. If you select the whole sequence of letter + mark, does the font menu indicate that it is in a single font (SBL Hebrew) or is it blank, indicating that more than one font is used? What happens if you select the sequence and try to apply SBL Hebrew in the font menu?

Have you tried using the Tiro Biblical Hebrew keyboard driver to insert the mark? I know this should work on your set-up, because it has been extensively tested.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it should be noted that the legacy fonts
provided by the Coptic Church do not follow the Unicode standard and
therefore documents using them will eventually need to be converted to use a
Unicode font. Therefore I advise using a Unicode Coptic font such as New
Athena Unicode, rather than those currently available from the Coptic Church
website.
