i'm a beginner so this is probably kind of annoying, but when i have the pixels turned on, they don't update when i link control points. any ideas on what i'm doing wrong? thanks.

Besides "pixels," did you turn on "gridfit," too? This attribute tells the rasterizer to "execute the code" that you're visually programming. Switching back and forth between "gridfit" on and off (with "outlines" turned on) gives you an idea how much distortion you're adding to the original design in order to obtain a desireable pixel pattern (keyboard short-cut Ctrl+G).
