Hi,

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but since I am not able to search the forum, I am posting a new question.

I am having trouble getting correct display of sha in Tamil (it was added in unicode 5.1, I think). I have tried a number of different fonts with no success.

It is possible that the problem could be related to old version of uniscribe on XP. I tried installing VOLT to update usp10.dll but that did not fix the problem.

Please see attached jpg for the prblem display. Would appreciate any help in getting around the problem.

Thank You for your reply.

I have usp10.dll version 1.0626.6001.1.800 in the directory for Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3. the rendering seems to be OK on Firefox but not IE8.

However, I have usp10.dll version 1.0420.2600.5512 in c:windowssystem32 directory. I am not able to replace it as the file is in use - even if I have uninstall complex script support. In Microsoft Word 2000, it using the file from windows/system32 and hence there are problems in display.

Q.1. Is recovery console the only way to update usp10.dll?

Q. 2. You referred to usp10.dll Version 1.626.6000.16386 - this is older than the one I have copied to application directories. Should I try with that?

Thanks!

usp10.dll version 1.0626.6001.1.800 is doing the job, too.
copy this version into C:   mp

To install it procede like this:
F8
 cd
 cd windowssystem32
rename usp10.dll usp10.bak
copy C:   empusp10.dll

Then restart your computer

Thank You. I was 'finally' able to copy the new usp10.dll to windows/system32 directory.

However, display with Latha font for sha is still not OK. Please see http://sanskritintamilunicode.blogspot.com/2008/09/latha-does-not-display-sha-forms.html and other related posts for some samples.

Is the version of Latha font different on XP and Vista?

Thanks,
Shree

Yes, several fonts were updated in Vista. You should consider upgrading. (Lots of other great stuff in Vista besides. )

I am checking this forum after some time. Thanks for all the replies.

Yes,  I did figure out that ETTamilNew font works fine for sha on XP as also e-tamil OT font - see http://sanskritintamilunicode.blogspot.com/2008/09/which-font-to-choose.html

I also checked the font version on my Vista machine and found out that the versons are different - http://sanskritintamilunicode.blogspot.com/2008/09/on-vista-you-can-use.html

Microsoft marketing people may not agree, but I would strongly suggest that updated versions of indic fonts, uniscribe and richedit, if required, should be made available freely with IE updates so that the Indic script webpages display correctly.

While I agree that it would be nice for everyone to upgrade to Vista or newer OSes,  a large proportion of users in India are on older versions of windows and don't/can't update the PC hardware/software as often as users in US.

People would expect that if they download IE8, it would display  Indic scripts display correctly, regardless of the platform they are on. If it doesn't but the competition does, then they will switch.

my 2cents :-)

Thank you all for your help.
