I have fontlab 4.6 for mac. I have added glyphs to an existing OTF font. The glyphs are viewable in illustrator and indesign in the gylph box but when brought up in word both for mac and pc in the symbols box the added glyphs are not there. Need suggestions on how to view them.

Thanks.

Most likely you have not assigned any Unicode codepoints to the glyphs. If the glyphs represent default shapes for characters that are part of the Unicode Standard, use the appropriate Unicode codepoints for them. Otherwise, use PUA (Private Use Area) codepoints from the range U+E000 – U+F8FF.

Thanks for your reply.  I have assigned unicodes and the added glyphs still don't show up. They do show up in illustrator and indesign (with and without unicodes).  Also their unicode numbers in word are written as "unicode characters" with a number that has nothing to do with unicoding numbers. Any other thoughts?

Thanks again.

Word only has access (through the Insert/Symbols window) to the glyphs with have names/unicodes belonging to a particular Codepage (256 glyphs max). Most commonly this codepage will be MacOS Roman or MS Windows 1252 Western but it could also be MS Windows Symbol (like Wingdings, Webdings etc for example) which occupy the PUA sub-range F020-F0FF.

To make sure your new symbols are accessible in Word, set your font's codepage in Font Info/Supported codepages; then make sure that exact codepage is displayed in the Font Window - all the glyphs in that codepage will have yellow cell headers; then put your glyphs into any of those cells and generate your font. Word will detect the font's codepage and display all the glyphs in the Symbols window.

Thank you both very much for your feedback. I have spent time doing a variety of tests to eliminate some problems and better report my findings.

This font is being made on a Mac 10.3.9 using word for Mac v. X and for Windows XP using Word 2003.  The font is being generated as an Open Type font in the form of a family of 3: Light, Book, and Bold.  A Semi-Bold will be added later.  We started with an existing font and added new glyphs.

This is what I have done:
Under the font info the supported codepages are set to “1252 Latin 1” and then on the main font page set the codepage to MacOS Roman. The new glyphs were added to the boxes with the yellow headers.

These are the results so far:
Illustrator/Indesign (Mac and PC): the fonts work and the new glyphs are seen.
Word (Mac and PC): fonts show up correctly and the new glyphs show up ONLY if the fonts are loaded separately.  There are issues when all 3 fonts are loaded together:  Mac: the Light will show up ok but the new glyphs are the Bold’s.
PC: (using suitcase) an error message comes up and says that the Book and Light version have the same font name (I have followed FontLab’s manual and Lean FontLab Fast for the family set up naming and they are different). The combination of Bold & Light or Bold & Book work fine.

Also I notice when I go to “generate font” the dialog box gives me the following choices:  regular (tt), bold (ot) – and a whole long list of other formats none of which give me a tt or ot extension.

Again, thank you for your feedback.

You mention that you have modified existing fonts. Before installing the new fonts make sure the old versions have been deleted. Though it sounds like you have been very thorough in preparing the fonts, there is always the chance that you've missed something. I would be happy to review your VFBs if you would like to send them to me (jaslyles@comcast.net).

Thank you for your feedback.  We have solved the menu conflict issue and also we can see the new glyphs in each software. The issue that exists now is that the new glyphs are jumbled and not consistent in any of the softwares. They need to be at the end of the glyph boxes. I can set them up to work on the mac (by swapping out unused characters with the yellow headers) but then that set up is all jumbled in windows.  Is there a way to have all the new glyphs appear in the yellow boxes, in order, at the end, and show up on both mac and pc in word, indesign, and illustrator?

Thanks again!
