A smooth tool, like Illustrator's, would be nice feature. You could then refine areas more selectively that have too many points. For example, when importing strokes from Illustrator into Fontlab.

What is it about the current Erase tool that you don’t like?

You can use the interactive Erase tool, you can use the interactive Contour / Path / Simplify Path operation, and you can use Contour / Optimize. Is there anything else/different that you’d need any of these tools to do?

Those tools dont let you selectively optimize specific areas as well as the illustrators smooth tool does.

I've played with the simplify path a bit more. It seems to pretty much do what I want, just uses a different methodology.
