Posted by: sigurarm I was wondering if FontLab developers could change the way the Icelandic characters are generated when a glyph is double-clicked or made by th Generate Glyph command.
These are: Eth. Now generated by putting a D and a hyphen. Ok. but usually the hypen is too thick. Should most often be made as thick as the bar of the letter H.
eth. Now generated by putting 9 in the slot. This is bad because it also takes the width of 9 along. 9 mirrored is also usually too high. A better solution would be to copy an o to the slot. Usually eth uses the same width.
Yacute and yacute. Fine. Usually one has only to move the accent.
Thorn. Now nothing is generated, only an empty slot. Best solution would be to get a P there and an I too would be a plus.
thorn. Now a b and a bar are copied to the slot. Please skip the bar. No use for it. Rather place a p or a b, best if both are copied.
Hopefully this can be done in next update because the current way it is done is a bit of a drag. Please contact me if further information is needed.

Posted by: sigurarm Yes, thank you Uwe. Been there many times. It's mostly the eth that is not "correctly" designed by font designers (even by well knows font designers. I have many times been asked to make a new eth for fonts, where the Icelandic characters are either totally missing or designed the way it's irritating to use.
Although it's not possible to give a precise rule on how eth should be I am in the process of writing a little guideline to help font designers to make it "right". But so far Gunnlaugur has made the best guide so far. Pitty that so few seem to know about it.
