what harm will be done if nodes are not placed in extremum?
im not concerned about hinting and the "optimized" curve just isnt as smooth as the original. so can i get away with leaving the nodes where they lay?

Yes, all fonts will work correctly without extremum points. The most important reason why points should be placed at extrema is because of hinting.
