Hallo,

I'm trying to import images (.tif) in the Background layer without any scaling, as a starting point. My images are of different sizes but have the same resolution. When importing them, I noticed that they get scaled so that the height fits the baseline-to-Cap height space. I don't want that as I lose the relation of proportions between lc and caps for example. I checked the manual, this forum, but can't find the preference to change or a person reporting the same behaviour.

By the way, the Search option gives me that. Only for me?

Thanks for your help,

A simple and reliable method that I have used is:
1. Make all your tiffs the SAME height - just high enough to fit BOTH the ascenders to descenders of ALL letters. This will mean a lot of empty white space in most cases but that's no problem - it will ensure correct relation of proportions is preserved.
2. Before importing/pasting your bitmaps, temporarily set both your Ascender to the full UPM size (1000 or 2048, depending on your preferred) and your Descender to zero (0). This will ensure bitmaps are imported at the largest possible size.

Dear Kevin,

Thanks a lot for you tip, I had thought of that but this is more a workaround to a default setting I don't understand. It adds manipulations, same for this answer I got from the Fontlab tech support: “just place a bounding box of the same size around every character before importing it -it will then scale based on that box rather than on the character”

I'd like to know why they decided to have this autoscaling behaviour as default, which apparently can't be turned off (my question to the tech support was how to switch it off).
Can you imagine auto scaling based on the box, in InDesign or Quark??? Of course, as a second step it's handy to be able to maybe fit this box.
